Everything Paw Atlas does, in detail
Paw Atlas is a daily record of your dog's life — walks, meals, treats, health, and the small things worth remembering. This page covers the whole app in detail. If you'd rather have the short version, the About page is a page long instead of ten.
Anything marked Premium needs a subscription. Everything else is free, permanently, with no account required. The rule behind that split is simple: writing things down is always free. What you pay for is looking further back and going deeper.
The Diary
The Diary is the app's home screen: one page per day, written in a warm, hand-kept style rather than laid out as a spreadsheet. Everything logged for a day lands here in order, and yesterday sits underneath today so you don't lose the thread overnight.
- Today Summary — a single card with the day's distance, walking time, steps and treats, alongside progress toward whatever daily and weekly goals you've set. It reads its own trend, so it can tell you you're ahead of your usual pace rather than just showing a number.
- Quick actions — log a meal, add a photo, jot a note, or record a training session without leaving the page.
- Two ways to read a day — the default is a written page with marker-highlighted names and margin notes. A toggle in the day header swaps it for classic record cards, one per entry, if you prefer a plainer list. The choice carries over to the Calendar.
- Automatic observations — when something is genuinely notable (a first walk in three days, a new personal best), the Diary says so in a line of its own rather than leaving you to spot it.
- Calendar — every day you've logged, on a month grid. Tap any day to read it back exactly as it was written, all the way back to the beginning.
Walks
Walk tracking is the centre of the app and is free in full — GPS, maps, pauses, markers, everything. No walk feature is behind the paywall.
- GPS route tracking — live distance, duration, pace and step count, with the route drawn on a dark map as you go. Steps come from the phone's motion coprocessor rather than GPS, so a lost signal doesn't invent distance.
- Pause and resume — stop for a chat or a long sniff without it counting as distance walked. The map draws a genuine break in the line rather than a straight cut across the gap, with pause and resume pins at either end.
- Treats on the walk — log treats as you give them, tracked separately from the day's total so you can see what's given on walks versus at home.
- Bathroom breaks — one tap for a poo or a pee, pinned to where it happened. Over time this feeds real insights about your dog's timing.
- Dropped markers — drop your own custom pins mid-walk for whatever matters to you: a bin, a water bowl, the fence with the loud dog behind it. Premium
- Follow a saved route — pick one of your saved routes before you set off, and watch it fill in on the map as you retrace it. Premium
- Friends met — record which dogs you ran into and where. Premium
- Training on the go — pin up to five training goals to the walk panel and log a rep with one tap while you're out. Premium
- Live Activity — an active walk appears on your lock screen and in the Dynamic Island with live distance and time, plus controls to give a treat, pause, resume or finish without unlocking the phone.
- Apple Health — finished walks are written to Health as a real workout, with the route attached.
- Walk summary — when you finish, you get the full route, your stats, any achievements unlocked on that walk pinned to the spot they happened, and a note field for anything worth remembering.
Sharing a walk
Any walk can be exported as a designed image. Tapping share opens a preview with toggles underneath for what appears on the map (bathroom marks, favourite places, distance markers, friends met, dropped markers, start and finish flags) and what appears on the card below it (weather, break times, training, places, friends, photos, your note). The preview redraws as you flip them, and what you save is exactly what you saw. Your choices are remembered for next time.
Food & Treats
- Treats with daily limits — define the treats you actually give, each with its own daily cap and icon, and tap to log. The app tracks both a per-treat limit and an overall daily count.
- Meals — log meals as you feed them, with calories counted against the daily limit you set for your dog.
- Wet and dry — tracked separately, so the split is visible rather than buried in one number.
- Defined Meals — save the meals you feed regularly as reusable presets, so the same breakfast every morning is one tap. Free for up to three; Premium beyond that.
- Nutrient targets — set daily targets for protein, fat, carbohydrates, fibre and moisture, and watch each meal contribute toward them on a progress grid. Free in full, including per-meal macros.
- Splurges — the occasional bigger indulgence, kept on its own tally with its own interval so a birthday cake doesn't quietly wreck the daily count. Free for four; Premium for more.
Nutrient tracking used to be a paid feature and isn't any more. Feeding a dog correctly isn't something to charge for — only the number of saved presets is capped.
Stats
- Overview chart — distance, steps, time or treats, bucketed by week, month, three months, six months or a year. Tap any bar to read that period's totals.
- Trends — the current period drawn against the one before it, so you can see whether you're actually walking more or it just feels that way. The in-progress bar is dropped from the line rather than dipping toward a partial total that reads as a decline.
- Insight cards — 34 different kinds of insight, each a real observation drawn from your own logs rather than a restated total: which part of the day carries the most distance, how far into a walk your dog tends to need a break, whether weekends are genuinely different, how your pace compares across times of day, which favourite place you actually visit most. Free shows three on rotation; Premium unlocks all 34.
- All Time — lifetime totals for distance, walks, time, steps, treats, bathroom breaks and longest streak, plus longest single walk, favourite place visits, photo count, splurges given, lifetime spent, unique routes and territory explored.
- Goals — daily and weekly goals for distance, time or steps, with progress and streaks tracked over time.
Weekly & Monthly Review Premium
At the end of each week and month, Paw Atlas builds an illustrated story of the period just gone — a sequence of slides comparing it against the period before, pulling out the best walk, the insights that actually moved, and a designed poster with an animated title. It's meant to be looked forward to rather than merely read, and any slide can be saved to your photo library.
Atlas
Atlas is where your dog's accumulated world lives — the map, the places, the people, the history.
Memory Lane
- Favourite place visits — every place you've marked and every walk that passed through it.
- Pictures — a running gallery of every photo you've added, newest first.
Explore
- Territory — an unexplored map that darkens everything you haven't walked, and clears as you cover ground. It grows over months into a genuine picture of your dog's range, and can highlight exactly what your last walk added. Free.
- Favourite places — mark the spots worth remembering, each with its own radius, and any walk passing through counts as a visit automatically. Free for three; Premium beyond that.
- Custom markers — define your own pin types with emoji and names, then drop them on walks. Premium
- Routes — save the route from any walk, then pick it again on a future walk to follow it, with the line filling in as you retrace it and credit toward "walked X times" once you've covered enough of it. Premium
Care
- Vets & groomers — contacts with one-tap calling and an optional map pin for the practice.
- Medications — schedules with dose reminders and a history of what was given and when.
- Heat cycles — start and end dates tracked over time for female dogs, appearing on the Diary and Calendar like any other entry.
- Appointments — vet and groomer bookings with reminders, optionally synced to your device's own calendar.
The entire health suite is free and always will be.
More
- Pet friends — the dogs yours actually knows, with a log of when and where you've met them. Premium
- Training goals — skills you're working on together ("sit", "recall", "loose leash"), logged as practice sessions rather than forced into an artificial 10-out-of-10 target. Set a rep target and the goal marks itself achieved when you reach it. Premium
- Expenses — what you've spent on your dog, with per-entry currency and a chart over time. No fixed categories — an emoji and a note are the category. Free.
Achievements
152 achievements across thirteen categories — Milestones, Walking Habits, Bathroom, Dog Logic, Pack Life, Training, Goals, Treats, Food, Exploration, Memories, Quirks, and a set of Hidden ones to find. They unlock from what you already log, so they reward consistency without turning care into a chore, and the ones earned on a particular walk are pinned to the exact spot on that walk's map. Around 45 are repeatable: earn one again and the badge keeps a running count.
Making it yours
- Six themes — each with its own palette carried through every screen, card and chart. All free.
- Light and dark — follow the system or pin it either way.
- Home screen widget — today's summary a glance away, in your chosen theme.
- Multiple dogs — switch between pets from any screen without losing anyone's history. One dog free; Premium for more.
Privacy
Your data lives on your device and, if you're signed into iCloud, syncs privately to your iCloud account. There is no fragment server in between. No ads, no third-party trackers, and nothing about your dog is sold to anyone. The full details are in the Privacy Policy.
Free & Premium
Free covers a complete day, every day, and your whole history: one dog, unlimited walks with the full map and every walk feature, meals and treats with calorie and nutrient tracking, the whole health suite, the Diary and Calendar, goals and streaks, every achievement, all six themes, the widget, and Territory.
Premium adds more than one dog, all 34 insights instead of three, the Weekly and Monthly Review, the four Atlas features above, and lifts the caps on favourite places, defined meals, splurges and monthly photos.
Caps apply to adding, never to viewing. If a subscription lapses, everything already created stays exactly where it is — you simply stop adding more.
